Many foreigners are think of settling down in Thailand as retirement destination after their retirement from the work life, mostly because of low cost of living with tropical climate offering diverse things to see and do.
Retirement visa or Non-Immigrant O-A Long Stay Visa is long term Thai visa with validity of 1 year time period and can be extended on yearly basis given that you fulfill requirement set by immigration Department.
Qualification:
Applicant’s age must be 50 years or above
Must meet of the one of the following financial necessities
- Personal bank balance of 8,00,000 THB in local Thank Bank account for 2-3 months prior to visa application
- Monthly income or pension showing monthly earning of at least 65000 THB. The proofs your income has to be certified by your embassy
- Combination of your bank balance and your yearly income.
There are two choices to obtain marriage visa. First choice for you is to apply for Non-Immigrant O – A Visa Retirement before entering to Thailand at Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate General Office. The embassy will grant you 90 days stay visa.
Second option for you is to come Thailand in 60 days tourist visa and then apply for change of visa status to be Non-Immigrant O A visa which is also granted for 90 days’ time period. Then you can file an application for the extension of your visa to one-year visa before your 90 days visa expires, provided you fulfill the criteria set by Thai Immigration department.
Supporting documents as proof of the financial adequacy
- Updated bank book or passbook
- Balance certification letter from the bank verifying the amount your account.
- Pension or income certification certified by your embassy in Thailand
Other documents the might be asked by the embassy or immigration officer in Thailand are
- Medical certificate
- Police clearance
Things to remember for marriage visa holders
Bank balance: Retirement visa is extendable on yearly basis meeting requirement same as initial application. However, please be noted that the amount of funds in your personal bank account has to be in the account for at least 3 months before the application of extension of one year is submitted.
90 Days reporting; Notification of your current residential address has to be notified to immigration department every 90 days
Re Entry Permit: If you plan to leave Thailand during the visa validity you will need to get reentry permit before you leave Thailand in order to maintain legality of your current visa. Otherwise you will have to start again from scratch. It is best suggested to get multiple reentry stamp at immigration department at the time of your visa extension
NOTE: Medical certificate and police report are not normally asked o be submitted when you apply for visa application in Thailand, however Thai embassy or consulate may ask for them when you apply visa outside Thailand.
The application for conversion of the visa from tourist to Non-Immigration O-A visa marriage has to be filed at immigration bureau at least 15 days before your tourist visa expires.
